Students in this course have the opportunity to reflect on their preparedness to teach English language Arts skills: Speaking/listening  Visual literacy/visually representing  Writing/composition/grammar  Literature/reading  For this portfolio project, students will: Collect materials and/or provide descriptions of coursework and experiences that represent their understanding of teaching and learning in the English language arts areas listed above; and, Reflect on their collection of materials, discussing their preparedness to teach each of these skills in secondary English classrooms. This portfolio may take whatever shape you like. Each of the four categories above should be represented by at least three artifacts. Think broadly and creatively. Writing/Grammar Text Presentations

Students in this course will have 12-15 minutes to present a text of their choice that focuses on the teaching and learning of writing and/or grammar. Research shows a variety of methods of writing and grammar instruction are worthwhile, and this is our opportunity to explore the options of how we can do instruction in these areas well. Each student is required to choose a text focused on the teaching and learning of writing and/or grammar and prepare a short talk to introduce the text to the class. As a teacher of adolescents, you will want to familiarize yourself with as much research and theory as possible that speaks to the teaching of writing and grammar. These text presentations will assist you in becoming familiar with the text that you choose, as well as the variety of texts and strategies that your classmates choose.
